Meet Luke Hayes Texas Director of OFA
Tuesday, May 5
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Victory Grill
1104 East 11th Street
Austin, TX 78702
RSVP on Facebook
A dozen years ago, a little-known schoolteacher shocked the state's political establishment by winning the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination while driving the state in a little white pickup truck.
Luke Hayes isn't running for office. But like Victor Morales before him, he has been driving around Texas lately in a white pickup as part of a national effort to keep Democrats energized after last year's presidential race.
Hayes, 25, is the recently arrived state director of Organizing for America, a political committee overseen by the Democratic National Committee. He's among directors placed by the DNC in 20 states, ranging from Democrat-leaning bastions such as California to GOP strongholds such as Alaska and Texas, which probably hasn't had anything close to a national political operative assigned to fanning grass-roots support for a Democratic president's policies since at least Lyndon Johnson's era.
The directors have been holding "listening tour" events focused on fueling grass-roots support for the Obama administration. And Hayes is penciled in to host his second Austin stop at 6 p.m. today at the Victory Grill.
Natalie Wyeth, the committee's spokeswoman, said: "We're also asking supporters and people new to the effort for their ideas on how we can best organize around the president's agenda in their community. The 'bottom up' philosophy served us quite well during the campaign."
There's an important runoff campaign for Texas Senate District 17, and Democrat Chris Bell needs our help. Please attend one of our scheduled phone banks and help turn Texas blue.
We're also planning a road trip for the December 6-7 weekend. We'll knock on doors and help get out the vote. Please RSVP with Ken Flippin, (512) 627-9171 or kflippin@gmail.com.
Your hard work has helped make history. Thank you for knocking on doors, making phone calls and getting on buses to swing states. This was the biggest and most effective grassroots campaign in history, and you made it happen!
But our work has only begun.
Now we must stay organized and help support Obama's policy initiatives. We must continue organizing on the local grassroots level to help turn Texas blue.
Our first post-election meetup with be Wednesday, November 19 at Scholz Garten. We'll discuss which direction to take our grassroots movement. Our goal is to maintain the momentum and help prepare for 2010 & 2012.

You've worked hard this year to elect Democrats from the courthouse to the White House. You've knocked on doors. Make phone calls. Waived signs at polling locations.
And your efforts have paid off. We've had record early vote turnout here in Travis County, and now we're getting ready for the final push.
Don't have any regrets on November 5. Help us make history and sign up to volunteer today.
Great news! For the first time in decades, a presidential campaign is putting field staff in Texas for the general election.

(we need you! and thanks abby for heading this project. - promoted by mariochampion)
How do we TurnTexasBlue? Well, we look back at our last few weeks of rest, savor it, and then get up and get at it again.
The Travis County Democratic Party office still is looking for volunteers.
While we have made lots of progress, we have literally 10s of thousands of records still to enter. This data is very very important, and we need some help.
This is a crunch project we need to finish in the next 10 days as part of the preparations for the campaign. The information we are entering will mobilize more volunteers!
This is easy data entry into a web form that must be done onsite at the TCDP office (1107 N I-35, at the intersection of 11th & 35). There is air conditioning and plenty of parking!
Schedule:
Sunday-Friday - 9am-8pm - EVERYDAY.
If you have a laptop with wireless Internet access, please bring it, but computer not required. If you have a wireless-enabled computer you'd like to loan to us, please let us know!
SATURDAY PARTIES You're invited to help us get organized by entering data from the precincts every Saturday in July (or until the project is done).
Bring your laptop & friends and come in for a 3-hour shift! No need to sign up in advance.
The campaign has been waiting for final answers on lots of logistical issues before scheduling trainings and making assignments. We're now at that point.
There are three groups of volunteers that will be assigned to each of the 31 senate districts to perform functions of oversight and monitoring the process. Another group of volunteers will be needed to staff the Obama office and do projects for the operation.
Update: The hotline is 512-476-2002. (This is for ALL of Texas.)
Greetings Everyone -
I hope everyone has had a chance to relax after Election Day & recover from Spring Break. As many of you know, this Saturday there will be nearly 300 County and State Senate District Conventions throughout the state of Texas. These conventions will serve as an opportunity for us to solidify Barack Obama's delegate lead here in Texas.
We need your help.
We are setting up a Help Line for delegates, alternates, and volunteers to call into on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to ask questions, report potential problems/rule violations, etc. and we need your help staffing the hotline. There will be shifts starting Thursday at 3 PM, Friday at 9 AM, and Saturday at 7 AM:
If you can help with any of these, please email me at mgoedman@barackobama.com. There will be a training for hotline staffers before your shift. You will be working out of the Austin HQ (816 Congress).
Here's the latest volunteer alert from the campaign.
We're getting ready for the upcoming Texas County Conventions, and you can help keep our momentum going in the Lone Star state.
Supporters like you were extremely successful in standing up for Barack at the Texas caucuses. Now we need to take the next step.
Join volunteers at our Austin office and help organize and prepare for the County Conventions that will help determine the number of delegates Barack earns in Texas.
We've now won Wyoming, so let's keep up the momentum. Mississippi's primary is on Tuesday, and we need your help. Click here to make phone calls.
If you live in Austin and you want to make calls with your fellow Texas volunteers, then swing by the 816 Congress office, Suite #200. Starting this Wednesday, the Congress office will be open from 10:00am to 8:00pm until the county convention on March 29. We encourage our volunteers to bring your cell phones and laptops, but that's not required.
In addition to phone-banking, we also need data entry volunteers starting on Tuesday. Also, this week is South by Southwest, so we'll be flyering various events. Swing by the office to learn more.
If you live elsewhere in Texas, stay tuned for future office updates. Next week, the campaign will re-open regional offices in DFW, Houston and San Antonio.
The campaign has decided to keep staff in Texas after March 4 to help us organize for our upcoming county and state delegate conventions.
We currently have a 3-7 delegate lead in Texas, and we need to stay organized on the grassroots level so that we don't lose any of our delegates on the county or state levels.
Volunteers across Texas are invited to join us today for a County/State Convention delegate training. If you can't make today's event, we'll have more volunteer trainings soon.

Thank you to the Obama campaign for deciding to invest in Texas and keeping paid staff here to help guide us through this complicated delegate process.

Now is prime time. Voters are getting home from work, so we need to call them and remind them to attend their caucuses tonight. Click here to call Texas voters. Thanks for volunteering!
Since this morning, Team Obama has already made 170,000 phone calls. In total, we've made 1,762,844 calls this week. Amazing!
Thank you to all our wonderful Texas volunteers who have worked so hard over the least year. Sen. Obama made a bet that the grassroots would rise up and demand change. Today, we will prove that Obama's bet has paid off.
Over the final days, the Clinton campaign has engaged in typical negative politics. But our grassroots operation is the biggest, baddest machine ever built in Texas, and we won't let negative politics win this time. We will take the high road and focus on Obama's positive vision for America.
With your help, we will win Texas the old-fashioned way...by knocking on more doors and making more phone calls. Just in the last couple of weeks, our volunteers have produced some mind-boggiling numbers:
* 300,000 doors knocked;
* 1,000,000 phone calls made.
It's now Election Day, so let's finish the job. Get out there and volunteer and let's go change the world!
After you caucus tonight, you're invited to meet us at Scholz Garten at 9:00pm for our Austin election results watch party.
We had two great events today with Michelle Obama at our UT and East Austin volunteer offices. After Michelle spoke, we all went block-walking despite the bitter cold weather. Thanks to all our volunteers for your dedication. Needless to say, we didn't see any Clinton block-walkers out on the streets tonight.
The Clinton campaign has called Texas their "firewall", but our grassroots efforts will push Obama over the top in the Lone Star State!
After you caucus on Tuesday night, come join us at our victory party at Scholz Garten, located at the corner of 17th & San Jacinto. Parking is available in the state parking garages across the street.
