How close are Presidential elections?

by: mariochampion

Fri Sep 26, 2008 at 10:59:52 AM CDT

We say "every vote counts" (altho that should probably be 'every counted voted counts' but that is a discussion for later...), but do you know how little change we need to bring among voters to bring the Change we are after? A student at MSU ran some data and made some helpful tables and maps to drive the point home.

If you can at all take a weekend or a few weeks or just phonebank to help out in New Mexico or Colorado, please do. This election might just turn on volunteers bringing out 'just a few more, just a few more'.

For the Stats lover in you...

There have been 12 Presidential elections that were decided by less than a 1% margin; meaning if less than 1% of the voters in certain states had changed their mind to the other candidate the outcome of the entire election would have been different.

That is what this page solves. What is the smallest number of total votes that need to be switched from one candidate to another, and from which states, to affect the outcome of the election?

Want to help Hurricane Ike victims?

by: mariochampion

Tue Sep 16, 2008 at 14:50:52 PM CDT

There are several ways to helps the tens of thousands of your fellow Texans affected by Hurricane Ike.

Donations of food, supplies to the Foodbank are always welcome. Check BurntOrangeReport.com for details on how to help.

Check this earlier post on how to donate time and money to the Central Texas RedCross at Volunteers needed

also, Juan Sepulveda, Texas State Director for Obama for America sends this message:

Dear Texan for Obama --

Help victims of Hurricane Ike Over the last few days, the victims of Hurricane Ike have seen an outpouring of sympathy and support -- and many of you are asking what you can do to help.

Here in Texas, much of the Gulf region was devastated by the storm. Many Texans are returning to homes that have been severely damaged, and more expect to be displaced and without power for several days to come.

But there is something you can do right now to lend a hand to fellow Texans.

Your financial support can strengthen organizations like the American Red Cross that help give shelter to families who have lost their homes and help communities get back on their feet.

Make a donation now to support the American Red Cross today.

Together, I am confident that we can help rebuild the communities affected by Hurricane Ike -- but we need your help.

Right now, you can make a huge impact in the lives of those affected by the storm by donating whatever you can afford -- even $10 -- to make sure the American Red Cross has the resources to help those in need:

http://donate.barackobama.com/redcross

Texans like you are already getting involved in the clean up and aid efforts underway across the Gulf area. If you would also like to be a part of those efforts, you can sign up to help an affected area near you:

http://www.centex.redcross.org

Volunteers are also meeting at the following location to take part in recovery efforts:

George R Brown Convention Center - Hall A
1001 Avenida de las Americas
Houston, Texas 77010

Thank you for your generosity, and for standing with your fellow Texans in their time of need.

Juan

Juan Sepulveda
Texas State Director
Obama for America

P.S. -- If you or someone you know is in need of assistance due to the storms, you can directly contact the Houston mayor's office for help:

URGENT: Central Texas Phonebankers need several hundred traveling Texans

by: hillsforobama

Tue Sep 16, 2008 at 08:11:29 AM CDT

Now is the time, more than any other for YOU to make a difference in this tight election.

Obama for America  URGENTLY needs phone banking volunteers from Central Texas to make calls to fellow Central Texan Obama Supporters and ask if they are available to go to a battleground state for 5 weeks for the Obama for America Campaign.  Barack Obama and Joe Biden are  asking Texans to find several hundred Texans that can go to the battleground states as FIELD ORGANIZERS by September 29th!

Most Texas volunteers will be going to either NM, CO or Florida.  They will need to go to Camp Obama before they leave for a battleground state.  The final two Camp Obama sessions are scheduled for September 20-21 and 27-28 right here in Austin.  All expenses will be paid by the volunteer, although lodging is provided and typically includes breakfast.  The local field offices will also provide some food.  Transportation in many cases will be donated by Obama supporters.  A web site for free/cheap airline tickets follows: http://www.travelforchange.org or call 650.353.1018 .

If you are interested in helping with these calls then please send Andy Balinsky an email @ balinsky@gmail.com with your name, email, and phone number so that he can assign you an account to access the virtual phonebank for this project.  You can call right from home, from the Coordinated campaign Offices and from the 620 Democratic Office.  Andy  will also put you in touch with Starshine Nolan, Obama For America   Central Texas Field Organizer.

This is something we can all do to help OBAMA & BIDEN  win!

Please forward this URGENT REQUEST  to all of your OBAMA contacts.

Thanks so much!

Chris Wilson

Now is a good time to give to Obama

by: mariochampion

Tue Sep 09, 2008 at 08:27:13 AM CDT

A report shows that Obama, while still bringing in loads more money than any previous candidate, is bringing in less than they projected. Traditionally ignored red states like Texas, and the not-quite swing states, and the aggressive ad buys to counter the unchallenged-by-the-press lies of Palin and McCain are dependent on all of us providing the fuel that runs the Obama train: money and time.

I gave in august, but, heck now it is september, and if you can, now would be a great time to give again, and sooner rather than later. You can do it: click right here to give to obama

Check this from Salon.com:

When Barack Obama and his campaign made the decision to forgo public financing and the $84 million that comes with it, it was with the expectation that they could continue -- and even improve upon -- their already record-breaking fundraising efforts. In fact, they relied upon that assumption; it was the only way to gain a real financial advantage over rival John McCain, who did accept public funds. But an article in Tuesday's New York Times suggests that the Obama camp has been coming up short, and is concerned.

Publicly, Obama people remain confident. But, the Times says, "The Obama campaign set a goal in mid-June of raising $300 million for the campaign and about $150 million for the Democratic Party over four-and-a-half months, fund-raisers said. As of the end of July, however, the Obama campaign was well short of the $100 million a month pace it had set, taking in about $77 million between the campaign and the party that month."

Ten, Twenty, two-hundred dollars... don't let yourself look back and say 'i could have helped more.' click right here to give to obama

by: mariochampion

Wed Sep 03, 2008 at 09:27:48 AM CDT

(posted for Chris Frandsen)

Hi my name is Chris Frandsen and I am putting together a veteran outreach program here in Texas. I think that this is the most important election in my lifetime as well as the most important election for the well being off our military and veteran community that I have ever seen.

I am looking for people who want to get involved.

We are having a kick off organizational meeting at 1930hrs Wednesday, 3 September. We will be at the Travis County Coordinated Campaign located at 1107 i-35 Austin TX 78702. That is on the north I-35 boundary road between 11th and 12th street. Hope to see you there!

I know this is a bit late getting out to this blog but if you are interested in getting involved with a statewide veteran outreach program please contact me. Any ideas are welcomed. I will follow up with a comment to this post to outline the outcomes from the 3 September meeting.

Hope you can make it!

(posted for Mark Greene)

Hey Fellow Texans for Obama;

We are a group of neighbors and fellow citizens from Fort Worth and the surrounding areas of Arlington, Grand Prairie, Haltom City, Hurst, Euless, Bedford, Colleyville and Grapevine who care about this country and know that we have much work to do to ensure that Senator Barack Obama, a great candidate, becomes a great president of the United States.

By working together for his election, and that of other Democrats in the Fort Worth area, we know that we can go far to get Tarrant County, Texas moving in the right direction.

http://tarrantobama.org

We invite you to bookmark this site for information and community support, as we build a strong coalition for much needed change and improvement in Tarrant County. Over the next few weeks, we will be revealing new tools and methods for communicating with each other as we work together to elect a new president and chart a course for a better future!

That's a big challenge. Can we do it?

Yes we can.

(Go Williamson County! For Diana Maldonado, Jaime Lynn and all the rest. - promoted by mariochampion)

Turn Williamson County Blue

This past weekend the Williamson County Coordinated Campaign office opened its doors for a kick off party to turn Williamson County blue. The coordinated office will be the home base for Jaime Lynn (for County Attorney), Diana Maldonado (for Texas House 52), Mark Thompson (for Texas Railroad Commissioner), Greg Windham (for County Commissioner, precinct 3), Brian Ruiz (for US House of Representatives, district 31), Mike Grimes (for County Commissioner, precinct 1), Woodie Jones (for Chief Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals), and James Dillon (for Texas house District 20).

Our first big volunteering event will be tomorrow Saturday the 26th when we will be block walking targeted areas in the county to register voters. We'll meet up at 9:30 at the Williamson County Coordinating office located at 110 S. I-35 Round Rock, Texas 78681 for block walking information. For more detailed information please contact Branden Frame at bradenframe@gmail.com.

Austin: Volunteers needed to move HQ - Tuesday

by: mariochampion

Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 21:50:53 PM CDT

Hey Austin folks

Obama HQ has to vacate the lovely and cavernous 816 Congress, immediately, as in Tuesday, starting at noon!

Much of the office is being transferred to a new location in the new TCDP coordinated campaign office at 12th and I-35, which is great news.

PRIORITY NEEDS
-People with trucks to ferry loads between the two spaces.
-Packing supplies (boxes, peanuts, tape, newspapers)
-Labor, Labor, Labor.

It is not mountains of material, but it is more than the last-working Austin field director JD Gins can do on his own.

Show up, email him or call him if you can help.

Wednesday - Register new voters at high schools across the City of Austin!

by: TJNarter

Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 22:26:58 PM CDT

( - promoted by mariochampion)

First-time voter participation was at an all-time high for the Texas Primary, let's continue the trend in November and register as many students as we can before the last day of AISD classes on Wednesday June 4th.

That's right! Tomorrow's the last day! So I'm hosting a city-wide Voter Registration Drive at almost all the Austin High Schools, but I'll need your help to make it possible! The more people participate, the more schools we can canvass!

Let's send a message to the youth out there, especially the one's about to graduate, that their voice matters, and now they have to right to use it through voting for the first time in November!
