Wednesday - Register new voters at high schools across the City of Austin!

by: TJNarter

Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 22:26:58 PM CDT

( - promoted by mariochampion)

First-time voter participation was at an all-time high for the Texas Primary, let's continue the trend in November and register as many students as we can before the last day of AISD classes on Wednesday June 4th.

That's right! Tomorrow's the last day! So I'm hosting a city-wide Voter Registration Drive at almost all the Austin High Schools, but I'll need your help to make it possible! The more people participate, the more schools we can canvass!

Let's send a message to the youth out there, especially the one's about to graduate, that their voice matters, and now they have to right to use it through voting for the first time in November!

Don't forget about local politics...

by: martib

Sat Mar 01, 2008 at 15:21:21 PM CST

(Normally, we don't highlight local races on this blog.  However, the incumbent in this upcoming Austin city council race (Jennifer Kim) is an outspoken Clinton supporter, and the Campaign Manager (Marti Bier) for the challenger (Randi Shade) is one of our original TFO volunteers.  We're thankful for all the hard work Marti had done for Obama, and we look forward to helping her campaign after March 4. - promoted by Ian)

PhotobucketWhat a long strange trip it's been, right? Since I got on board with Texans for Obama at it's inception  in late '06/early '07 I have been so inspired and excited to watch our movement grow. We went from a group of ten of us in a room hoping, to a 20,000 person rally in Austin, to where we are today: on the brink of TEXAS making the difference in electing a Democratic nominee that has overcome all odds to become a first on so many levels.

With all of this excitement, and hundreds and thousands of people becoming active in politics for the first time in recent Texas history, I want to take a moment remind people that this is just the beginning.

This is the beginning of what could become a huge change in the tides. If all of you that have come out to caucus, blockwalk and phonebank for Obama will pledge to continue working on someone else's campaign when March 4th has come and gone, think of the progress we can make!

In addition to helping Obama, I'd like to encourage you to continue working at home in your local races. Think of the effect we could have as Obamaniacs if we elected like-minded people to all of our, County and City Councils all over Texas.

After March 4, I'll be focusing all my energy on an important city council race in Austin.

Update from Ohio

by: News

Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 13:01:39 PM CST

While we Texans are voting and volunteering in record numbers in hopes of delivering our state for Obama, we shouldn't forget that the good folks in Ohio are working hard as well.  Here's a great story from Time that examines Obama's grassroots operation in the Buckeye state.

Obama's Ohio Grassroots Advantage
Time

Home base for Barack Obama lies on the opposite side of town, in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood, home to mostly working-class African-American families. One of Obama's first volunteers here was Antoinette McCall, a substitute high school teacher who has never worked a campaign before in her life. McCall became active 11 months ago, donating what little money she could to Obama's campaign. She used Obama's website to recruit volunteers and run a phone bank from her living room. She convinced friends who own beauty salons to organize their customers, and created a database of hundreds of Obama supporters.

Photobucket"It's like we had this whole movement built up before the campaign staff even got here," says McCall, 36. In a few months, McCall, a political novice, has built an organization rivaling that of some state senators who form the backbone of Clinton's establishment support. "By the time they finally opened the office," she says, "this place was packed."

As the Democratic candidates for President prepare for their debate at Cleveland State University Tuesday night, grassroots Obama supporters like McCall are the key to his having a chance on March 4 of continuing his stunning streak of 11 straight primary or caucus victories - and all but locking up the Democratic nomination. While the blue-collar Buckeye State has been viewed as part of Clinton's firewall strategy for stopping Obama's momentum, the truth is that even though she is still leading in polls, her campaign is playing catch-up when it comes to the all-important job of grassroots organizing. "I'm 52, I've been around for a while, and [Obama's] is the most spontaneous, energetic political operation that I've ever seen," said Keith Wilkowski, a lawyer and former Democratic Party chair in Toledo.

In other news, Obama just recieved the endorsement from the Toledo Blade newspaper...

Obama, for change
Editorial - Toldeo Blade

We urge Ohio Democrats to vote on Tuesday for the man who spoke those words, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois. It has become clear during the year-long primary campaign that he eclipses Sen. Hillary Clinton as the strongĀest possible candidate to run in the general election against the presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain.

Moreover, we believe that Mr. Obama's inspiring life story, keen intellect, strong but quiet confidence, ready grasp of public policy issues, and his fresh and optimistic world view are what America needs after eight years of an administration that repeatedly has shown open contempt for the American people and for the Constitution.

Mr. Obama offers a breath of fresh air and new hope at a depressing time in the life of this nation. His selection would send an unmistakable signal to the world that America really may be living up to its promise of a just and truly pluralistic society.

Pictures from today's Austin Town Hall

by: Ian

Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 12:34:27 PM CST

While it's always exciting to see Sen. Obama, today's event was especially awesome.

It was a true town hall, and Obama took a bunch of questions from the audience.  Unlike the Clinton campaign, Obama didn't plant friendly questioners in the audience.  Instead, when hundreds of hands went up, he pointed at random people in the audience and let us speak directly to him.  He even took a couple of questions from a nine-year-old Austin girl who smartly used the opportunity to get him to sign her book.

Not only did Obama demonstrate an impressive ability to think on his feet and address a variety of topics, but I was also proud of my fellow Austinites for asking such thought-provoking and issued-based questions.  Thankfully, we didn't have to suffer through any lame questions like, "Who's going to be your VP?"

The questions covered the following issues:
* Software patents
* Welfare reform
* Tax cuts for the wealthy
* Aid to Africa
* Education and "No Child Left Behind"
* Fiscal policy and job creation

3:45am!

by: Ian

Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 07:59:23 AM CST

You'd think that after Obama had inspired 20,000 and 30,000 person rallies in Austin, along with a June rally and February Town Hall in San Antonio and a 12,000 person rally last night in San Marcos, that just maybe, Central Texans would no longer be super excited about Obama's Austin Town Hall this morning.

Wrong.

The line for this morning's Austin Town Hall started forming at 3:45am.  It was just above freezing this morning, but that didn't deter Team Obama.  We're fired up and ready to go!

Biggest rally in San Marcos history?

by: News

Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 07:18:56 AM CST

Over 12,000 people attended the Obama rally last night in San Marcos.  Our volunteers in San Marcos have been working hard for a year, and yesterday's event was very inspiring.

Some are saying yesterday's event was one of the biggest political rallies in San Marcos history.  Does anyone know of other 10,000+ rallies in San Marcos?

Here's the front-page story from today's Statesman:

Down by the river, thousands come to cheer Obama

PhotobucketThousands of Hays County residents, who have seen more national political figures in the past week than in the previous 40 years, roared for Barack Obama on Wednesday night at a spotlighted rally straddling both banks of the San Marcos River.

Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts stumped for the Illinois U.S. senator last Thursday. On Monday, Chelsea Clinton stumped for her mother, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton. Then came Obama, who started a three-day return tour of Texas earlier Wednesday in Duncanville and was introduced in San Marcos by Lyndon Nugent, former President Johnson's grandson. Obama thanked Nugent for his support "and everything that his family has done for this country."

Looking over the crowd - estimated at about 12,000 by Texas State University Police Chief Ralph Meyer - Obama said, "Y'all do it big in Texas." Then he launched into his speech, which was briefly interrupted by someone calling out their love, and Obama replying, as he does often, "I love you back."

Obama, whose platform includes proposals to roll back tax cuts given to the wealthy and to make health insurance and college more affordable, drew a big cheer by reminding the crowd that President Bush won't be on November's ballot, though the cheers turned to boos when he added: "Now, that's the good news. Keep in mind that he is coming back to Texas.

Texas welcomes Tom Brokaw!

by: Ian

Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 17:26:26 PM CST

Apparently word is getting out that our campus volunteer headquarters is rocking and rolling.  Tom Brokaw himself just came to our office to learn more about our grassroots efforts.  He was very down-to-earth, and he was well aware that Sen. Obama had met with Mack Brown and the Longhorn football team.  Hook 'em!

Thanks to our student volunteer leaders who have helped get our campus office up and running in just a few days.  We've gone from 0-to-60, and we're now making thousands of voter outreach calls every day out of this office.  Our movement is growing every day, and we welcome more supporters to join our volunteer operation.

Also, thank you to Eva, Amy and the rest of the Women for Obama team for organizing successful house parties across Texas this past weekend.  And finally, a special thanks to Matt and David for helping start the orginal Obama book club, long before Sen. Obama even announced for President.  It's been a long journey, but it's been a lot of fun!

We did it!

by: News

Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 08:03:59 AM CST

Our people-powered grassroots campaign just passed a major milestone.  As of today, Barack Obama has inspired over 1,000,000 citizens to donate their hard-earned money to his presidential campaign.  Incredible!

Sen. Obama made a bet at the beginning of his campaign.  Unlike Hillary Clinton, he decided not to take money from lobbyists, and instead he put his faith in regular working folks to fund his underdog campaign.  Now, it appears his bet has paid off.  Whereas many of Clinton's donors have reached their $2,300 fundraising limit, Obama has bulit a massive network of small donors who can still contribute to his campaign.

Thanks to everyone for your committment.  We've officially passed the 1 million donor milestone, and our grassroots movement is growing every day.  Yes we can!
