The Austin American Statesman has a well-researched and stat-rich article on the Latino vote, the Black-Brown friction myth, and how a "new report shows Obama has erased [Clinton's] advantage among Latinos."
Read the whole thing. It's quite good (and i think quite rare) to see such an in-depth actual analysis in a mainstream article.
Some of the more salient quotes:
Though he ultimately lost to Republican John Cornyn, [Ron] Kirk's success with Hispanics undermines the oft-quoted idea that antipathy between blacks and Latinos will hinder Obama's own pursuit of Hispanic votes.
Hispanics represent about 20 percent - 2.6 million - of Texas' registered voters, and after flirting with the Republican Party during the Bush years, they are back in the Democrats' fold, according to a Pew Hispanic Center national survey in December.
Analysts say Hispanics make up about 35 percent to 40 percent of Democratic primary voters but might account for considerably more on March 4 if Texas mirrors the record turnouts in other states.
Those numbers, combined with the sheer star power of two popular candidates, are creating a buzz that has some feeling almost giddy about the importance of Latino voters this year.

AmigosDeObama.com has a catchy original song. Video and lyrics below the fold..
We are desperately seeking a voice that speaks authentically. Race and politics aside, it's leadership not sound bites that we need. If you claim to be compassionate, show it. If you preach unity, help us unify and heal our great divide. If you want our vote, earn it. Be real. Barack Obama represents a defining moment for our generation. We have an opportunity to be agents of change and bring awareness to the Latino community.
We all have a unique story. It doesn't matter that I'm Mexican-American, born in East LA, raised in Utah, lived in DC and worked on the South-side of Chicago. What matters is what I'm doing now and how I'm helping my neighbor, my brother.

Hi All,
2008 is a very important election year. If you are registered to vote in the State of Texas - our Texas state primary is March 4th. Your vote is very important in picking the Democratic nominee for President. I am supporting Barack Obama. Barack Obama is a man who can unite our country despite our differences in race and ethnicity, socioeconomic standing, geographical area, religious affiliation and political leaning.
Barack Obama is a man who inspires. He has rallied millions of young voters and ordinary citizens like you and I to stand up and believe that the same old Washington ways are ineffective and hurting our country. He voted against the war in Iraq from the very beginning. He has excellent plans to solve our problems regarding immigration with fairness, compassion and integrity. He is the candidate for change, the candidate who wants to do things differently in Washington.

(more great news! i feel the momentum starting in Texas! - promoted by mariochampion)
Joining the Austin American-Statesman and the Dallas Morning News, both the El Paso Times and San Antonio's Express-News choose Obama:
San Antonio Express-News, http://www.mysanantonio.com/op...
America needs a president that tries to create unity out of diversity, marshalling all the forces - red, blue or purple - that make this country great.
Sen. Barack Obama is the Democratic candidate that offers the best chance to reach that lofty objective.
Obama is generating so much excitement that Sen. Hillary Clinton, once leading comfortably in the polls, is bracing for the fight of her life.
El Paso Times, http://www.elpasotimes.com/opi...
The El Paso Times recommends that El Pasoans voting in the March 4 Democratic presidential primary cast their votes for Barack Obama. A weary America, tired of the status quo, fed up with business as usual, is longing for a positive change -- and Barack Obama is that change.
Of the two viable Democratic presidential candidates, Obama represents a fresh future rather than an inevitable harking back to the past -- what was a divisive and contentious past for many.

Great news from a great Mexican-American leader, as reported in the RioGrandeGuardian.com
REP. PETE GALLEGO ENDORSES OBAMA
State Rep. Pete Gallego, chairman of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, has announced he is endorsing Barack Obama for president. "I made a determination that it's time to pass the mantle on to a new set of folks at the national level," Gallego told the Guardian...
"Obama's life story and his values are so much closer to the Latino community than any candidate other than Bill Richardson," Gallego said.
"Part of what drives me is his life story. It's a fascinating life story. It's more than just the issues, it's his values. I think Hispanics and South Texas should really be able to relate to him."

(thanks! great perspective, and a really clear combination of emotional and rational reasons to jump on board. - promoted by mariochampion)
I resisted the Obama bandwagon for a long time. In fact, I almost took a job on Gov. Richardson's campaign in New Hampshire and he was my candidate until his slip up at the LOGO debate last August.
For months I kicked dirt while pondering my choices. How can a red-purse-carrying woman, the daughter of an independent and feisty single mom consider anyone other than Hillary Clinton?
The choice was much easier than I thought it would be.

The Dallas Morning News blog is reporting State Rep. Rafael Anchia adds his voice to the growing list of Hispanic elected officials supporting Barack Obama. Joining State Rep. Juan Garcia, Austin councilman and former president of the Firefighters Union Mike Martinez, and many more, Anchia sums it up nicely:
excerpt from http://dallasmorningviews.belo...
So why is Anchia supporting Obama? For exactly the same reasons I support him: "He's allowed me to dream about a better future for our country." Obama will help lift the morale of the country at a time, Anchia said, when "we definitely have a morale problem."
He thinks focusing on the race barrier between blacks and Hispanics is exactly the wrong way to go. Rather, the focus should be on opportunity. Obama's success means that, for all racial minorities, a huge barrier has been broken down in American politics. "I look at him and say, hey, my child can be president of the United States," Anchia said.
Which brings up the question: Why are you supporting Obama?
