Obama Clinton Presidential Debate Tickets (Updated)

by: Ian

Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 12:28:20 PM CST

Hello Obama-maniacs,

A lot of you have been calling/emailing me asking how to get tickets to the presidential debate at UT-Austin.  I apologize for not being able to answer everyone's questions promptly.

UPDATE 1: KXAN AUSTIN REPORTS NO TICKETS AVAILABLE TO GENERAL PUBLIC.
UPDATE 2: THE STATESMAN REPORTS 100 TICKETS TO  GENERAL PUBLIC
UPDATE 3: The drawing link is up at www.txdemocrats.org
UPDATE 4: UT STUDENTS STILL HAVE A CHANCE
UPDATE 5: UPDATE ON TICKETS FOR UT STUDENTS

The short answer is I don't know yet.  But as soon as I do know, you will know.  We'll just post the info on our blog.  I assume there will be some tickets allotted on a first-come first-serve basis, so I recommend grabbing your sleeping bag and tent and be prepared to camp out.

It's safe to say there simply won't be enough supply to meet demand.  So if you don't get a ticket, then join us at Scholz Garten starting at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday 2/21.

Thank you to everyone for your interest in Sen. Obama.  I wish I had the time to follow up with everyone, but please be patient, and we'll post the debate ticket info as soon as we get it.

Update... (0.00 / 0)
Apparently the ticket distribution is being run by the Texas Democratic Party.  It's very disappointing that tickets are not available to the general public.  There should have been a system for first-come first-serve, and their decision not to include the public was a major mistake in my opinion.  What ever happend to the Democratic Party being the people's party?

If you'd like to email the TDP and express your concerns, here's their contact info:

25% of tickets for activists (0.00 / 0)
lets ask them for 25% of the tickets for activists, and come back here with any replies.

(and lets keep the emails calm. i am just saying this because if they get any of the kind of emails i have been getting (ya know, given how much power i wield!) i can see it getting out of hand and that wont help anybody.)

thanks

Good suggestion Mario (0.00 / 0)
We should make a specific ask regarding debate ticket allotment, and 25% for the general public seems fair.

And yes, we should be polite, but we should make our voices heard loud and clear.  Not only did the TDP refuse to make any tickets available to the general public, but they're hosting their official debate watch party at the swanky Hyatt Hotel and charging $50 each.  That's outrageous!  With this historic opportunity in our backyard, why is the TDP making it so hard for regular folks to partipcate?

If you'd like to attend our free Texans for Obama debate watch party and not pay the $50 TDP entry fee, then join us at Scholz Garten on Thursday 2/21 starting at 5:00 p.m.  Over 400 people have already RSVP'd for our party, and the general public is invited.

No tickets (0.00 / 0)
Sure I'm disappointed.

But what if you were trying to organize this. Obama shows up in Feburary and 23,000 people come to hear him in the rain. Everybody I know wants to be there for the depate - and probably there are some Clinton suporters too - who want to see Hillary. It is an organizational nightmare. The debate organizers can't possibly accomodate all of us who want to be there.

Actually - I'm not sure seeimg him for the debate is the issue. Seeing him is.

So rather than talk about the debate - call instead for an Austin for Texas for Obama rally - Auditorium Shores again? The Erwin Center? The UT Stadium?

100 Tickets!!! (0.00 / 0)
I heard on the news this AM that 100 tickets would be made available through a drawing, here is what I found online:

From the Austin American-Statesman website:
"The Democratic Party said late Wednesday that it will make 100 tickets available to the public through a drawing.

The state party initially said that no public tickets would be available and that most audience members would be elected officials. That prompted angry blog posts and calls to local Democratic Party offices.

"We have received a huge volume of calls today on this subject, some of which have been less than pleasant for our staff to hear and deal with and which accuse us of all manner of bad behavior," Travis County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Elliott wrote in an e-mail newsletter Wednesday."

Ticket Drawing Link is up! (0.00 / 0)
The drawing link is up at www.txdemocrats.org

Click on the link at the top (the ad for the debate) then click on the link to enter the drawing...

you must be a registered voter, and they are trying to evenly distribute the tickets between Obama and Clinton supporters, as well as to some "Undecided" voters.

Only enter once, because they will toss out duplicate entries!

Good luck everyone!

I voted today in Leander (0.00 / 0)
AT precinct 203. I was the only person there, but the democratic line had seen more action, that was obvious. Someone came in after me, and she was very pumped up and excited to vote. I suspect she was an Obama supporter. ;)  I am ready to caucus now!
