| During Monday night's Issue/Policy Forum, we had the "All-Star Expert Panel" of David Butts, Mark Yznaga, and Elliott McFadden!
We had over 110 people attend our Issues/Policy Forum on Monday! That was our largest turn-out yet. (we've been averaging about 65 people per meeting).
And we had about 200 attend Barack's B-Day!
Here is a concise summary of the key issues for Travis County Voters heading into the election.
David Butts pointed out that many voters will vote for the down-ballot races based on the Presidential vote...and the national issues will steer this from the top-down(foreign affairs, economy, health care, environment).
But on the local level, per Mark Yznaga, here are the key issues affecting our voter's:
- Transportation
- Economy/Pocket Book Issues
- Health Care
- Affordable Housing (lack there of)
- Energy
- Public Safety (and budget for police)
Mark also pointed out that Austin is thought of as a "progressive city", and we certainly talk the talk about being good progressives, but the reality is we're far behind most cities in the compassion area...for example, the national average of poverty level is 13%, and Austin is 18%. Pathetic that 18%+ of Austin residents are living below poverty!!!
Elliott McFadden added:
- Growth (cost of growth/responsible growth/how to deal with Austin's massive growth).
I must agree with Mark that these are critical issues for us locally. I would add:
- Preserving the character of Austin
- Environmental issues
We'll see you next Monday for our next Issues/Policy Forum!
Best,
David Kobierowski
